Just this week I have started looking into Matthew 5-7 : The teachings of Jesus that have come to be known THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT. As I read through this part of Jesus ministry It struck me that Jesus was a challenging preacher….obvious you may think!
The Sermon on the Mount is primarily aimed at his disciples, although was heard by many unbelievers who were intrigued to see what the fuss was all about! Jesus specifically preaches about rules for Christian living. He sets a pretty high standard! If you lust with your eyes, you have committed adultery etc.
Jesus teachings are amazingly challenging, and what an example to us who are preachers. We should be teaching and preaching with challenge that if applied can be amazingly life giving! Jesus didn’t teach a message that made people feel satisfied, that made people feel holy, and comfortable, on the contrary he taught a message that made people squirm, question, and change!
There is a clear disparity between the style of Jesus teaching and many sermons that I have heard in the UK church. If we want to see people changed, lives transformed, kingdom building, then we need to be a challenging, obedient church!
