This word fits into two parts of my life and journey at the moment.
Firstly, as a church we are journeying through Galatians and over the course of the next few weeks will be looking specifically at the different fruits of the Spirit. Kindness being one of them! Kindness is a facet of God’s character and as believers we are called to live with it in our lives. The application, as always, that comes from that is HOW? How can I be kind, show kindness, live it out in a world where it seems so alien?
This leads onto a personal challenge that I have felt in the last few days. The question being, not how do we, but HOW AM I SHOWING KINDNESS?
This last weekend I had the privilege of sharing some time with Roy Crowne from Youth for Christ as he visited our church. He spoke in several contexts about showing acts of kindness, because small acts of kindness show big love! This re-enforced my challenge. Then yesterday a great friend of mine whom I haven’t seen for a while came to visit and gave me my birthday present. A book called RANDOM ACTS OF KINDESS. That made me chuckle, as I figured God was trying to tell me something – BE KIND! My friend proceeded to challenge me to undertake all 365 random acts of kindness noted in the book before my next birthday!
But, it is so so true. A random act of kindness, with no other motivation than serving God and being kind displays BIG love. It makes people ask questions….WHY?
I need to learn to be kind, not just to those I know, but also to those who I don’t know!
