'Often freedom is seen as the ability to do whatever you want. But freedom isn't being able to have whatever we crave. Freedom is going without whatever we crave and being fine with it.'
I've recently been reading SEX GOD by Rob Bell, the book from where the above quote comes from. It's an interesting read, but this section on freedom stuck out to me.
Humans seek fulfilment, and different people seek it in different ways. The thing is when we seek after unhealthy things they do not satisfy the longing. We think we are free because we can choose to do whatever we want, but when we do it, it doesn't always fulfil! True freedom, therefore, does not have to submit to cravings of fulfilment because we are content with who we are and what we are.
That is a really great thought. We all have our own desires, but lets not become captive to those desires, because that will bring us the opposite of freedom!
We need to learn to 'be fine' in who we are, what we do, why we're here! Ultimately it comes down to having identity, and the only freeing, fulfilling identity comes through identity in God!
