1 Samuel 3

I have started reading the book of 1 Samuel again.
As I read chapter 3 it struck me how key it is that we tune in to the voice of God.

In the first verse we read that the word of the Lord was rare in those days.

Samuel was ministering under Eli in the temple and the voice of the Lord called him. Instantly, as he usually would upon the call of his master, Samuel ran to Eli, only to be told that Eli didn't call him. Samuel returned to lie down and again heard his name being called. He again went back to Eli, who again said that he hadn't called him. This happens again, until Eli recognises that the voice would be that of God.

When Samuel heard the call again, said 'Speak Lord, for your servant is listening'

We need to hear and listen to God's voice and then do what He says

To take on board:
We must be careful not to put our own slant or perception on God's voice

We must trust in what God says and not be afraid of man
vs15: He was afraid to tell Eli

Eli's faith at the end of this chapter is a great example. Samuel tells him that God was going to allow his family to suffer. Eli's response to this is
He is the Lord, let Him do what is good in his eyes

Let's strive for such faith that seeks to listen to God and be obedient to whatever God says, no matter how hard or unfair that may seem!
